Cycling around Kilimanjaro & Tropical beaches of Zanzibar

This group journey is ideal for adventurous singles & couples wanting the balance of outdoor activities, combined with the relaxation of a tropical beach getaway.

Let us share with you Tanzania, for your adventure of a lifetime!

Cycle Kilimanjaro

The heartbeat of Mount Kilimanjaro is found in the mountain villages that encircle its lower slopes. There is no better way to experience this first hand than by bicycle, which enables you to cover many kilometres while traveling at a pace slow enough to notice life’s details and respond to the friendly Jambo! Greetings. The three cycling days, begin in Mbahe Village, circumnavigate the mountain counter-clockwise, and finish at a farm in West Kilimanjaro, passing through coffee & banana farms, crossing cool mountain streams, and out to remote Maasai outposts – all on two wheels!

This multi-day-ride encounters all kinds of roads and trails, from tarmac and smooth dirt to rocky, narrow, and steep paths. No riding is extremely technical but all cyclists should be comfortable on a variety of routes and able to ride in all weather conditions.

Zan-zi-barrr!

Whether you choose to spend the days enjoying Zanzibar’s idyllic beaches and culture, its warm tropical waters or snorkeling around the coral reefs and rich marine diversity, or even taking up one of the more adventurous water-sports on it’s crystal clear waters, it is the perfect destination to experience a little of everything.

Zanzibar is an island steeped in culture and history – a destination that brought adventurers, seafarers and traders from far and wide. In Stonetown, the capital of the island, you can get an experience much of the untouched history of this island with the many beautiful Arabic touches like the architecture, as well as experiencing first hand sensational spices for which the island is known.

What does eco-adventure mean to us?

  • Get off the-beaten-path by exploring unique local places and reduce the overuse and damage to fragile environments.
  • Free from cars (as much as we can!) and explore under your own power.
  • Stay in local, basic tents and guest cottages, in villages and mountain-farms with meals made from organic produce grown on site.
  • Meet with locals on a human level in natural encounters on the paths you travel, not in a contrived commercial setting.

Kili Ride

This 3 day, 95-mile (150km) bicycle tour passes through colourful mountain villages, past lush coffee and maize farms, into cool mountain forests, and then out into the drier and sparsely populated savanna on the northwest side of the mountain. Enjoy a mode of travel that allows you to experience more personally the sights and sounds of life in Kilimanjaro. Carry only your camera and water as your gear are transported by our support vehicle (always available for tired cyclists) to overnight camp sites! Filling camp breakfasts prepare you for the day’s ride and sumptuous dinners bring closure as the sun sets for the evening. Lunches are picnics along the route.

Highlights

  • Experience the changes in landscape from the slopes of Kilimanjaro’s southeast side around to its western side
  • Discover parts of Tanzania mainland, few tourists ever see
  • Perfect mode of travel to experience your surroundings
  • 95-mile (150 km) total bicycle tour
  • Stay at a tropical beach on Zanzibar Island, where you have the choice to do all kinds of water-sports & visit the island of spices

CYCLING LEVEL

Intermediate cycling level is recommended. This multi-day-ride encounters all kinds of roads and trails, from tarmac and smooth dirt to rocky, narrow, and steep paths. No riding is extremely technical but all cyclists should be comfortable on a variety of routes and able to ride in all weather conditions.

OVERNIGHTS KILIMANJARO

Overnights are spent in comfortable mobile camp.  We use large step-in car-camping tents of different sizes, providing plenty of room whether just 1-2 people or a family.  Tents are set up in advance by our camp crew, with extra thick camping pads for a comfortable night’s sleep.  Rest, relax, recover, and refresh with a shower, where available, or a sponge bath with a warm basin of water.

MEALS & DRINKS @ KILIMANJARO

Using only fresh local ingredients, the camping chefs prepare delicious and nutritious meals, inspired by local cuisine, and specially designed for those burning lots of calories.  We endeavor to meet all dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.) as best as possible.  Please make clear all requests on your registration so we can be prepared in advance.  All camp meals are served in a dining tent with camp table and chairs.

Tea and snacks at camp after the day’s activity are provided.  Please bring your own energy bars, gels, and other snacks if you desire those during the day.

All water is bottled or filtered. Fill hydration packs and bottles in the morning, with opportunities to refill when meeting the support vehicle.  Bring powdered sports drinks to help replenish electrolytes and add flavour, as you desire.

CLIMATE & WEATHER KILIMANJARO

This eco-adventure takes place in tropical mountainous areas, mostly at elevations between 900 and 2000 meters (3,000′ – 6,500′).  Days can be warm to hot and the sun may be harsh at times 30°C (86°F). Nights and mornings are cool (cold) and quite misty in the early morning.  Tropical showers or downpours can occur, and are usually quite brief.

WEATHER ZANZIBAR

Check out Zanzibar weather overview per month!

On average, the temperatures are always high. The months of April, May & November have a high chance of precipitation. The warmest month is February with an average maximum temperature of 31°C (87°F). The coldest month is September with an average maximum temperature of 29°C (84°F). Throughout, nights are average around 22°C (72°F) and daily around 30°C (86°F)

THE TIDES IN PAJE, ZANZIBAR

The difference between high and low tide, is exceptional. Every 5-6 hours, at low tide, the sea water is being drawn back for about 2 kms, which means there is no kite-surfing at the shore. You can walk out to the reef at low tide and look for shells and sea creatures.

The warm ocean and white sand beaches are ideal for relaxing & activities. Soft, white sand beaches, clear panoramic views of the ocean, lots of small coffee and lunch places and funky beach clubs like Jambo & B4!

During the windy months - from late December/January till Mid March & from late June/July till September - its perfect for kiting.
