The Cederberg region, a 2½ hours drive from Cape Town, stretching from the Middleburg                                      Pass at Citrusdal to north of the Pakhuis Pass at Clanwilliam, encompasses some 71,000 ha                                  of rugged, mountainous terrain. This area is a treasure house of pre-colonial rock art and it
has a rich botanical diversity, being part of the Cape Floral Kingdom of South Africa.                         
A major portion is a proclaimed Wilderness Area that recently obtained World Heritage status.

It was proclaimed a wilderness area in 1973 and has grown into a popular destination for hardy hikers and mountaineers.

The Cederberg region contains a unique combination of attractions, including:

• Over 2000 sites of an impressive variety of San (Bushmen) rock art, produced by pre-colonial hunters and gatherers.
• Amazing red sandstone cliffs and rock formations, sculpted and weathered by nature.
• A fascinating variety of flora, including the endemic Clanwilliam cedar tree Widdringtonia cedarbergensis, an endangered species.
• Abundant bird life and a wide variety of fauna, including the rare Cape Mountain Leopard.
• Communities of farmers & rooibos tea growers, established by early 19th C. The Best Hiking Trails in the Drakensberg Mountains                                                                                                      Stretching for around 1000km and marking the eastern side of the Great Escarpment, the Drakensberg Mountains (or perhaps more correctly just ‘Drakensberg’, meaning Dragon’s Mountain), offer some of the best hiking opportunities in South Africa. Here can be found some of southern Africa’s highest peaks and Drakensberg hiking trips offer something for everyone, including gentle half-day hikes, longer multiple-day trips, challenging climbs and, for those with the necessary experience and equipment, technical mountaineering.

• Otter Trail: Officially the oldest and undoubtedly the most iconic
hiking trail in South Africa and one of the finest multi-day trails in the world.
• Dolphin Trail: Hike the Tsitsikamma Coast in comfort. Imagine a hike similar to the Otter Trail but with overnight stays in luxury lodges and without having to carry your luggage.
• Cederberg Trails, like the Wolfberg Arch and Peak & the Heuningvlei Trail and Pakhuys Pass.
• Crayfish Trail: This is an unexpected canvas where culture, community, heritage, natural beauty, wine, food, luxury and adventure collide.
• The Cape of Good Hope Trail is a two-day, one-night trail that follows a circular route through the reserve.
• Drakensberg Mountains: The ascent of Cathedral Peak makes for an extremely challenging one-day excursion and is for experienced hikers only. It is possible to scale the 3,004m peak independently, but a guide is recommended.
