Magical Stone Town

As the heat of the day eases, people begin to emerge along the harbour in Stone Town, the old part of Zanzibar’s capital, a World Heritage Site.

You’ll love exploring Stone Town on foot. The deteriorated buildings tell the stories of past times. Ruled for centuries by the Sultanate of Oman, Tanzania’s laid-back archipelago is home to a vibrant blend of African, Islamic and Portuguese architectural and artistic styles.

Time has eaten up the grand architecture from past times. The buildings date from the 19th century and are mostly made of coral stone. You can spend days strolling around the maze of alleys, admiring beautiful cravings, balconies and the famous Zanzibar doors.
