A perfect combination: Cycling around Kilimanjaro and tropical beaches of Zanzibar
The best of 2 worlds, in 1 country!
This 10 day adventure is ideal for people wanting the balance of an adventurous, active experience combined with the relaxation of a tropical beach getaway.
Cycle the slopes of Kilimanjaro
The heartbeat of Kilimanjaro is found in the mountain villages that encircle its lower slopes. There is no better way to experience this first hand than by bicycle, which enables you to cover many km. while traveling at a pace slow enough to notice life’s details and respond to the friendly greeting, Jambo!
The three cycling days start in Mbahe Village, circumnavigate the mountain counter-clockwise, and finish at Simba Farm in West Kilimanjaro, passing through coffee and banana farms, crossing cool mountain streams and out to remote Maasai outposts – all on two wheels!
This multi-day-ride encounters all kinds of roads and trails, from tarmac and smooth dirt to rocky, narrow, and steep paths. No riding is extremely technical but all cyclists should be comfortable on a variety of routes and able to ride in all weather conditions.
Zan-Zi-Barrr
Whether you choose to spend the days enjoying Zanzibar’s idyllic beaches and warm tropical waters or snorkeling around the coral reefs and rich marine diversity, or even taking up one of the more adventurous water sports on it’s crystal clear waters, it is the perfect destination to experience a little of everything.
Zanzibar is an island steeped in culture and history – a destination that brought adventurers, seafarers and traders from far and wide. In Stonetown, the capital of the island, you can get an experience much of the untouched history of this island with many Arabic beautiful influences like the architecture, as well as experiencing first hand sensational spices for which the island is known.

WELCOME TO TANZANIA!
MOUNTAIN FARM
After arrival at the airport (Kilimanjaro Int. Airport, Arusha Airport or Moshi Airport) you’ll be picked up and transfered to the farm cottages where you stay for the night. Rest and relax at this beautiful located, cozy mountain-farm. The cottages sit on a ridge at about 1800 meters on the south-eastern flanks of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Bike and gear-check and optional light hiking, swimming or exploring the farm and village.
STAY AT FARM COTTAGES
The farm cottages provide an unforgettable experience for those seeking cultural enrichment and wanting to feel the daily rhythms and vibrancy of the African village life. Guests enjoy the warm hospitality of the local Chagga people, who settled the slopes of Kilimanjaro, a range of invigorating activities and freshly prepared cuisine made from organic produce grown right at the farm! The cottages sit on a ridge at about 1800 meters on the south-eastern flanks of Mount Kilimanjaro. The farm lodge contains large gardens of tropical and temperate fruits and vegetables, which provide most of the ingredients of the fresh home‐cooked meals.
START OF YOUR CYCLING ADVENTURE
Follow your guide, cycling down from Mbahe to the tarmac road along the eastern flank of Kilimanjaro. The serpentine road passes through vibrant Chagga farming villages full of small shops and churches, set amongst maize, coffee and banana farms. The overnight stop is just below the entrance gate for the Rongai climb route up Kilimanjaro.
RIDING SURFACES: You’ll ride on dirt roads, trails, and footpaths, and some sections of paved road. Inclines are generally gentle, but expect some steep segments and stretches that will require pushing for all but the strongest cyclists. There may be rocky, bumpy, rutted, washboard, or slick sections. Be prepared for all riding surfaces.
Approx. distance: 44 miles / 71 km cycling
TENTED STAY ON THE KILIMANJARO SLOPES
The overnight camp site is set in a large garden amongst a wooded forest with views over the Kenya plains. Relax after this first cycling day and enjoy the skills of the local cooking staff.
FORESTS, MONKEYS & CULTURE
Today the cycle route heads northwest between the Kenyan Border and the edge of Mount Kilimanjaro. The route passes through the Rongai Forest, home to black-and-white colobus monkeys, which you may see roadside. You enter Maasai land with the dirt track which traverses a sparsely settled area inhabited by these proud herdsmen.
Approx. distance: 31 miles / 50 km cycling
HEAR THE CHILDREN SING
At the campsite which is located nearby a primary school ground, you may hear the Maasai school children singing at the close of school while you relax with tea and snacks at the end of a satisfying cycling day. Admire the brilliant sunset reflecting off Kilimanjaro’s Kibo Peak.
WEST OF MOUNT KILIMANJARO
The route is now exclusively dirt tracks and passing through farmland of Maasai who have chosen to settle and grow crops. You are heading south, the mountain on your left and the open plains below, where elephant, zebra and giraffe freely roam. Savor a hearty lunch upon arrival at the overnight farm. Relax in the afternoon or explore the area with a hike to the nearby gorge. Return in time for well-deserved sundowners on the verandah.
Approx. distance: 19 miles / 30 kms cycling
FARM STAY
Your overnight stay is at a working farm on 3,500 acres of rolling hills in West Kilimanjaro, offering breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro to the east and the Maasai steppe and Mount Meru to the west. Ask for the many activities to do at the farm and around.
ZANZIBAR
Depending on the check-in time for your flight to Zanzibar, you have the morning to explore the farm on foot, bike or farm vehicle. Or, for the enthusiastic cyclist, extend your ride by continuing on quiet dirt roads and footpaths amongst the remote farming villages abutting the mountain, finishing in the small market town of Sanya Juu.
Afternoon transport to the airport for your onward flight to Zanzibar.
Upon arrival on Zanzibar, you will be met and transferred to the hotel for check-in, leaving you the afternoon to relax and enjoy at leisure.

Cycling level
Intermediate cycling level is recommended. This multi-day-ride encounters all kinds of roads and trails, from tarmac and smooth dirt to rocky, narrow, and steep paths. No riding is extremely technical but all cyclists should be comfortable on a variety of routes and able to ride in all weather conditions.
Overnights at tented camp
Overnights are spent in comfortable mobile camp. We use large step-in car-camping tents of different sizes, providing plenty of room whether just 1-2 people or a family. Tents are set up in advance by our camp crew, with extra thick camping pads for a comfortable night’s sleep. Rest, relax, recover, and refresh with a shower, where available, or a sponge bath with a warm basin of water.
Meals & drinks during cycling days
Using only fresh local ingredients, the camping chefs prepare delicious and nutritious meals, inspired by local cuisine, and specially designed for those burning lots of calories. We endeavor to meet all dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.) as best as possible. Please indicate all diet requests on your registration so we can be prepared in advance. All camp meals are served in a dining tent with camp table and chairs.
Tea and snacks at the camp after the day’s activity are provided. Please bring your own energy bars, gels, and other snacks if you desire those during the day.
All water is bottled or filtered. Fill hydration packs and bottles in the morning, with opportunities to refill when meeting the support vehicle. Bring powdered sports drinks to help replenish electrolytes and add flavour, as you desire.
Kilimanjaro climate & weather
This eco-adventure takes place in tropical mountainous areas, mostly at elevations between 900 and 2000 meters (3,000′ – 6,500′). Days can be warm to hot and the sun may be harsh at times. Nights and mornings are cool (cold) and quite misty in the early morning. Showers or downpours can occur at any time, and are usually quite brief.
Zanzibar, the tides in Paje
The difference between high and low tide in Paje, is exceptional. Every 5-6 hours, at low tide, the sea water is being drawn back for about 2 kms. This is a perfect time to relax or you can walk out to the reef and look for shells and sea creatures. Surfing at the reef and diving can take place at all times during the day.
Great, soft and white sand, clear panoramic views of the ocean, lots of small cosy coffee and lunch places and a great beach club called Jambo! The warm ocean is ideal for beach activities and popular for kite-surfing in the windy season, which is from July-September & mid December-March.
